Academics:
- Teaching mostly comes from grand ward rounds once a week, but is dependent on the team (mostly comm serves and mos) contributing. When referring patients to other hospitals some consultants might teach on the phone during a consult.
Supervision:
- You will be placed in a section in the hospital where you might work with a team (1 or 2 other doctors) or you might be in a department alone. You will be responsible for your patients and their care. No one will check up on you unless a complaint is raised.
Clinical Exposure:
- The nearest referral hospital is ±2 hours away. You may deal with complicated patients for hours until transport arrives to a higher facility. Large range of conditions seen.
Departments worked in:
- Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Anaesthetics, Emergency Department, OPD’s - Calls are ± 4-5 per month depending on staff allocations. 3 doctors on call per night - emergency, wards and anaesthetics (if there are theatre cases). Surgeries done - c-sections and ectopics. You’ll be expected to cut. They will teach you in the beginning if you’re not comfortable. You can rotate through departments and maybe stay longer in a certain department if you can motivate.
Social Scene:
- Extremely rural area. Closest town is 1 hour away and is also quite small.
