Academics:
- "The MOs know a lot. But it’s always a good idea to read up on topics yourself for further consolidation and have the latest update - if that is your scene.
However, if you really don’t know something, can always call the referring hospital (Paarl) for advice. "
Supervision:
- Rather loose reign. But it’s a small community, and the files are very well archived - just keep that in mind.
Clinical Exposure:
- See many of the common conditions at a primary level. Great learning opportunity to work the patient up right from the start before referring.
Departments worked in:
- Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Emergency Department, OPD’s - "Three wards - 1) male ward: mix of medical and surgical patients. 2) female & paeds ward: again, mix of medical and surgical patients, including obstetrics. 3) Private/COVID ward: previously used as a ward for Private (medical aid) patients, but has since changed to the respiratory/COVID ward.

Additional Comments:
- "A small hospital serving the Matzikama area, around 80beds.
Majority Afrikaans speaking - the sisters can help translate if you struggle.
Get ready for some 35C+ temp in summer (but at least the hospital is airconned throughout).
XR available with three radiographers. Available after hours as call outs
Sonographer on site working weekdays only
NHLS lab on site - same working arrangement as XR department.
No doctors quarters available. Not the easiest to find accommodations in town; therefore start asking the hospital/local real estate once you’ve decided you’re going to Vredendal.
Two clinics that the Hospital had to cover daily during the week (you’ll unlikely do both).
No consultants, but can always call Paarl Hospital if unsure and if the MOs aren’t able to help you. Occasional specialists’ clinic (Obs/Gynae, Ortho, Internal Med, Surgery)
There is a theatre on site, mostly used for Caesars. But occasional minor procedures, and AKA/BKA. "
