Umphumulo Hospital

CMSA Accreditations: None

Rural Allowance: Yes

Doctors Quarters:

  • No comments yet.

Academics:

  • Academics were presentations done by the community service doctors and some of the other MOs. The topics were basic medical emergencies and conditions.

Supervision:

  • There are always 2 Medical Officers on call. They always put a Comm Serve on call with an MO who was post Comm Serve. Doesn’t mean they were more knowledgeable or skillful. But there was at least always a second hand on call and someone to call on for a second opinion.

Clinical Exposure:

  • Being a district hospital we were exposed to a large variety of clinical cases. Each patient brought a different problem to deal with which helped me grow and learn a lot.

Departments worked in:

  • Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Emergency Department, OPD’s - "No set formal departments. You rotate through OPD/Casualty - Male Ward - Female Ward - Pediatrics - Maternity.
In the adult wards you will be exposed to everything. Psych patients, general medical conditions, surgical conditions, Orthopaedics.
Paeds and Maternity have Consultants from Stanger on Standby each day and night to discuss any complicated cases with which is a great help. "

Social Scene:

  • No social scene at the hospital itself. A small rural community. However it is about 1 hour from Ballito which is an awesome part of KZN with lots to do.

Additional Comments:

  • "A place of self growth. Not great seniors around, however the referral system is good and the Consultants at Stanger Hospital are mostly helpful and happy to accept patients that can’t be managed at a district level. Accomodation is an Issue. There are basic DQs which aren’t very fancy. However most people tended to live in Stanger or Tinley Manor and commute back and forth each day. (Approximately 50min drive) - just so that they could live somewhere more more urbanized.
Work load wasn’t bad at all. Would say it’s pretty chilled for the most part. You will have time to chill and study if you want.
Great place to learn and find your feet. Will equip you well for whatever lies ahead. "
