Supervision:

  • Very specialised in some areas, however as community service doctors after hours, you cover a wide range and high amount of patients. Supervision when not in person is always available telephonically. Mostly very approachable seniors.
  • In paeds surgery, you are mostly on call alone, but registrars are available to come in, if there are situations that you are struggling with.

Clinical Exposure:

  • Depends on whether working in surgical or medical division. Both will expose one to a wide range of paediatric pathologies however always within speciality you are assigned.
  • You get to see an array of surgical conditions and theatre exposure is available, but you may have to come in on your off days or holidays or even stay later after working to see more theatre cases

Departments worked in:

  • Surgery - Tiresome calls where you hardly rest; however very good work environment with friendly and supportive colleagues and seniors.

Social Scene:

  • Surgical department specifically has very supportive and friendly work environment no matter seniority.
  • All of Cape Town is at your disposal.

  • Overall brilliant facility with an amazing paediatric surgery department.
