Pietersburg (Polokwane) Hospital

CMSA Accreditations:
DCH(SA) DCH(SA)

Rural Allowance: No

Duration of Rotation: 12 months

Doctors Quarters:

  • No comments yet.

Academics:

  • In internal med we have morning meetings every Friday. M and M’s on Tuesdays - quite helpful and informative. Post intake ward rounds are also very informative.
  • The learning and teaching is declining in the facility due to the worsening frustrations of the staff due to the issues around salary and working hours.

Supervision:

  • Very bad.
  • You are almost always paired when on call during comm serve .
  • It does have consultants that are enthusiastic about their job but it also has many that don’t care anymore. unfortunately the later group is more.

Clinical Exposure:

  • You get forced into surgical subspecialties Uro, ENT, neurosurgery, O&H, cardiothoracics.
  • Due to being the provincial hospital we get all the referrals so one is exposed to a lot.

Departments worked in:

  • Internal Medicine - Spent the whole year in internal medicine! It has been bliss!
  • Surgery - Worked Specifically in ENT, hours were increased and salary decreased, the result was no one wanted to work. Too much politics in the hospital that no matter how much you to learn the environment makes you bitter.

Social Scene:

  • Good. People are nice and kind
  • It’s Limpopo. If you come from a major city like Johannesburg it’s honestly a let down around here. Little to do that does require a long drive elsewhere. It can be peaceful if that is what you prefer, but due to the limited variety the novelty is lost fast.

Additional Comments:

  • Bad choice for comm serve. Not enough general choices like paeds ,int med, casualty, surgery. No good supervision or support.
  • If you can avoid Limpopo, personally I would. If you cannot, focus of getting out in one piece.
