CMSA Accreditations: None
Rural Allowance: Yes
Duration of Rotation: 12 months
Doctors Quarters:
- No comments yet.
Academics:
- “They do CPD presentation on Fridays, but unfortunately I found that the presenters often presented outdated information. The doctors did not make an effort with the teachings.
Protocols are hard to find or nonexistent.”
Supervision:
- Depends on the department you work in but generally you are left to alone with no supervision.
Clinical Exposure:
- Good exposure to numerous types of pathology. Really teaches you to think outside the box and to be independent. Management of these conditions are not always done the way you were taught. Bad habits are easy to pick up.
Departments worked in:
- Internal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Emergency Department, OPD’s - “Anaesthetic exposure, but not a formal department. Everyone covers work in maternity and will need to perform anaesthesia for ectopics and c/s.
Hospital has psych, paeds, internal medicine, female and male surgical, maternity, EC and OPD departments. Community service doctors do not get to choose where they are placed, you are typically placed wherever needed.”
Social Scene:
- “Nothing to do at Giyani. There is a mall where there is one restaurant (Spur).
If you are from a city of big center, then you will find that the food quality and variety at the stores are rather poor.
Magoebaskloof and Tzaneen (1.5h away) offers outdoor activities and restaurants. Would highly recommend going there for weekends away.”
Additional Comments:
- "Accommodation is town very hard to find or in bad condition. Recommend staying on hospital grounds (also for safety reasons) but be warned the DQ conditions are terrible, filthy, run down, none of the aircons work.
The community predominantly speak Shangaan (even the young people), it is very hard to communicate with your patients if you don’t.
There are some good doctors and good people in Giyani, but the work is tough. "
