Mohau District Hospital

CMSA Accreditations: None

Rural Allowance: Yes

Doctors Quarters:

  • No comments yet.

Academics:

  • This is basically up to yourself and your colleagues - we ran BLS simulations with the staff, even the general staff which really made CPR a lot better in general

Supervision:

  • You are one of 3-4 doctors. They are nice, but not as comfortable with emergency cases. Help is available telephonically from the academic hospitals, but you will have to make most decisions on your own.

Clinical Exposure:

  • You see a wide variety of pathology from trauma to maternity to neonates and paeds as well as HIV/TB/MI’s/Strokes/internal medicine and surgical cases

Departments worked in:

  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Emergency Department, OPD’s - The hospital has 30 beds in total, for paediatric, maternity and adult cases, with no surgical facilities on site. Good rehab team. You work in the ward and in casualties at the same time and you are on call for the entire hospital

Social Scene:

  • The people in town are super kind and friendly, but you would have to find your own way to get to know them - not a lot of social events happening, If you moved here with a friend or partner, it would be okay. However, it might be very lonely for a single person.

Additional Comments:

  • This is rural Free State, You will be left on your own with an immense lack of resources but the nursing staff here are amazing and really helps you navigate through the system. You call from home which means that you often get some rest. Study leave is not really granted, but you do have time on your hands to study for a diploma or primary exam, If you are okay with the lack of resources and rural living, you could have a really relaxed time. Not the worst place to end up for comm serve.
