Academics:

  • Decent teaching from family medicine registrars /experienced MOs and consultants. Weekly presentations and regular journal clubs.
  • Daily morning meetings and handover sessions. Weekly tutorials and article appraisal. Super academic place.

Supervision:

  • Always have a senior on call with you . Everyone lives on hospital premises so it is always possible to ask for help in difficult situations. They encourage independence but if ever feeling out of your depth there is senior support available.
  • Amazing senior doctors that will ALWAYS help out! Even if they are not on call, they will to join the vibe. Friendly and supportive team. Probably the best team you will work with. (Ever)

Clinical Exposure:

  • Wide variety of conditions seen and often managed to a point of care far beyond what is expected of a district hospital.
  • Amazing clinical exposure! Lots of time to cut C- seactions, do spinals, get involved in skin grafting, enough trauma and MVA exposure for : ICD’s, fracture reductions, resuscitation and all your usual casualty stuff. Good overall and rounded family medicine type exposure.

Departments worked in:

  • Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Emergency Department, OPD’s - It is a district level hospital so you do a bit of everything. You can definitely request to work in certain areas but becoming competent in O&G/paeds is a must.
  • Internal Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Anaesthetics, Psychiatry, ARV clinic, Emergency Department, OPD’s - It is a family medicine orientated rural district hospital so you do everything. There is someone in paeds, neonates, maternity, mgw, fgw, tb wards, opd, casualty and moody and weekly clinic outreach. When your on call, it is for the entire hospital. So you learn loads of everything.

Social Scene:

  • There is a strong community of health professionals which socialise at regular intervals. At times it can be a bit dull because of the distance to the nearest town but the surrounding areas are beautiful and there are many places to explore on the weekends around the rural EC.
  • A social bunch: always keen for an ultimate frisbee game, beach mission, braai, games night or dinner.

Additional Comments:

  • I thoroughly enjoyed my year and think if you are keen to experience something different for comserve then it is an excellent choice. I definitely learnt a lot about myself as a doctor and a person in the year and it was an invaluable time for me.
  • Madwaleni is a great place. Do it.
