General De La Rey Hospital

CMSA Accreditations:

  • None

Rural Allowance:

  • Yes

Doctors Quarters:

  • Yes.

Academics:

  • No consultant available on site.
  • Grand rounds with hospital MO’s every week.

Supervision:

  • Varies from adequate to minimal, you may do calls alone.

Clinical Exposure:

  • It’s a district hospital so bigger cases usually go straight to MPH or sometimes come via our casualty before referral. Otherwise + + advanced RVD, TB, CCF and broken bones. Also alot of maternity and ICAs.
  • Has theater for C/S and maternity related cases only.
  • General OPD/Casualty exposure

Departments worked in:

  • General female ward (Medicine, Surgery, Ortho and other none Obs/Gynae related in-patient admissions come here)
  • OPD/Casualty
  • Obs/Gynae wards
  • Theater (O&G cases only)
  • Note: There is no Male/Paeds ward, these patients requiring admission will be sent to Gelukspan Hospital/Itsoseng CHC

Social Scene:

  • Occassional functions organized.

Additional Comments:

  • Work starts with daily morning 07:30 meeting.
  • The only district hospital in the district with a functional theater at time of writing. All none level 2+ maternity cases will come to you. Good exposure to be independant in O&G.
  • There is no “new hospital“. Check on Google streetview, it is what you get.
  • Doctors help each other out, but management does not. You will be put under the spotlight in PSI meetings or thrown under the bus for the most mundane things.
  • Expect prolonged delays in EMS service to collect patients you referred.
  • Avoid this hospital unless you’re interested in O&G.
