Embekweni Hospital

CMSA Accreditations: None

Rural Allowance: Yes

Doctors Quarters:

  • No comments yet.

Academics:

  • There was no academic program in place. Onus is upon you to keep up academically.

Supervision:

  • Supervision varied, there was no consistency. Either you have no supervision or seniors to liaise with; or you are micromanaged with poor communication- a recipe for stress as you can imagine.

Clinical Exposure:

  • "Limited clinical exposure due to limited services offered at a district level of care. However, the scarce resources forces you to put on your thinking cap and Improvise where possible. "

Departments worked in:

  • "There are no departments per se. At a district level you cover aspects of all the domains of medicine ( I.E internal medicine , obgyn, paeds, Orthos , Casualty , minor OT, Psych, ARV clinic , OPD), without actually rotating through a specific department. The hospital has a male, female, Paeds, maternity ward and a Casualty. You rotate through the Hospital complex and also service 3 outreach clinics within a 70km radius to your base. "

Social Scene:

  • It can be very isolating. Zastron is a very small one Road kinda Town. Your social scene mostly compromises of the other comserves. Be prepared for Unreliable internet connection, that will sometimes leave you off the grid for days a time.

Additional Comments:

  • "It is a beautiful quaint town. Great for a quick stop over when on vacation. Not recommended for comserve if you have any intentions of gaining decent clinical exposure in an academic setting. The standard of care due to limited resources is low overall. All you can do is pray and do the best that you can do. The overall experience compared to that of previous years comserves has declined.
And due to the lack of support and lack of consultant expertise - you often feel like an overworked, undervalued employer. Not advised if you were hoping for a quiet year to regain your a sanity after internship.
If you do get placed here, try to swap, if not hold your breath, one year will fly by. Good luck ! "
