Bethal Hospital

CMSA Accreditations: None

Rural Allowance: Yes

Duration of Rotation: 12 months

Doctors Quarters:

  • No comments yet.

Academics:

  • Mostly self studying of cases you come across. academic meetings far from academic.

Supervision:

  • Not entirely available especially after hours as conserves do calls alone with a medical manager to help resolve any urgent dilemmas e.g. refusal of emergency patients by better equipped facilities. ward rounds and OPD have no supervision so you’ll have to read up, clinical manager does give great support for urgent/emergencies and does weekly audits of management.

Clinical Exposure:

  • Calls and ward rounds done alone so you’ll likely manage most common cases. only exposure to paeds and obstetrics is in casualty unless you volunteer to rotate in those.

Departments worked in:

  • Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Emergency Department, OPD’s - amount of time spent in each department is dependent on the group’s agreement at the beginning of the year. Cutting time if you volunteer for obs and show the sessional for surgery and orthopaedics that you are interested.

Social Scene:

  • Friendly staff that’s likely to take you in. Lots of load shedding so not so much with the outside world.

Additional Comments:

  • Based on other hospital reviews and those of doctors and nurses who have rotated across Gert sibande district, Bethal offers amongst the best support, healthy working environment and hands on experience.
